Liverpool boss Vicky Jepson has confirmed that she will be looking to add players to her squad in January as The Reds look to increase their push for promotion in the FA Women’s Championship.
The former Barclays FA Women’s Super League side lost 2-0 at Durham yesterday, a result which leaves the club five points adrift of the only promotion position.
When speaking to FA Women’s Super League Full-Time after the match, Liverpool boss Jepson admitted that she will be entering the January transfer window in a bid to bolster her squad, however, this year’s window is going to be extremely complicated.
“The recruitment strategy began before the season even started so adding to our squad is something that we want to do.
“It is a difficult time though, especially with the pandemic and with different players from different countries.
“There are some barriers with it but we are looking to add to our squad.”
Liverpool were made to take on Durham without a number of key first team players including Rachel Furness, Jess Clarke, Jade Bailey and Ashley Hodson. Jepson highlighted the fact that some of the club’s young players had been thrown in at the deep end at Maiden Castle.
“We were missing key players on the pitch which is a big loss” added Jepson. “Furney, Jess, Jade, Ash, these are all key players to our squad.
“We knew that travelling here today, we would have to rely on other players stepping up to the mark.
“I think that they gave everything they could for the club but it wasn’t enough against a good Durham side.
“We have got a chance now during the Christmas break to get players back fit, I have such a small squad. I had two 16-year-olds on the bench, I had a 19-year-old starting in midfield (Missy Bo Kearns) who did really well so we struggled today with numbers.”
Liverpool have a three-week break to get their injured players back to fitness. The Reds face London Bees in their next match at Prenton Park on Sunday 10 January 2021.
