All FAWSL and FAWC fixtures to be played behind-closed-doors after latest tier announcement

The Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship will resume behind-closed-doors at all venues following the winter break with the UK Government having moved a number of areas into higher tiers to help combat the current COVID-19 ‘national emergency’.

The number of positive Coronavirus cases and recorded deaths have rocketed in recent weeks with the UK Government taking further action by increasing restrictions earlier this afternoon.

The Isles of Scilly is the only place in England to remain in Tier 1 while there are no areas in Tier 2, meaning that no other location in the UK is permitted to host limited crowds at elite sporting venues. The latest restrictions therefore impact the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship with no clubs now located in a tier where fans are permitted to be accommodated.

A number of clubs moved into Tier 3 or higher before Christmas meaning the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United would no longer be permitted to welcome fans to stadiums while further areas dropped into higher tiers on Boxing Day including Lewes, one of the leading clubs in creating a safe environment for socially distanced spectators.

This afternoon’s latest announcement by the UK Government means that Merseyside clubs Everton and Liverpool will fall within Tier 3 and will therefore no longer be permitted to admit fans while Bristol City’s Twerton Park home also moves from Tier 2 to Tier 3.

The Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship are set to return with full fixture lists on 9/10 January 2021.
