Manchester City’s American duo Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle have joined up with the United States national team for their January camp meaning that they will not feature for The Cityzens for at least the next four games.
The camp is scheduled to run from 9-22 January and will include two international friendly matches against Colombia in Orlando, Florida. This means that the pair will be unable to take to the field for Manchester City in their Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures against West Ham United, Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion this month.
In addition to the three league games, Manchester City will also be without Mewis and Lavelle for their crucial FA Women’s Continental League Cup quarter-final tie against current holders Chelsea which will take place at The Academy Stadium next week.
The news comes at a very inopportune time for City head coach Gareth Taylor who already has to juggle with the absences of four players following positive COVID-19 tests. Midfielder Mewis has arguably been City’s best player so far this season and while fellow FIFA Women’s World Cup winner Lavelle hasn’t reached the same lofty heights as her compatriot, her absence will be just as notable given the depleted numbers.
Manchester City are currently set to return to action on Saturday when West Ham United are the visitors to The Academy Stadium in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
