PREVIEW: Bristol City v Aston Villa

Barclays FA Women’s Super League strugglers Bristol City and Aston Villa will be hoping to move to within 90 minutes of an FA Women’s Continental League Cup final appearance when they meet at Twerton Park in the quarter-final stage on Wednesday evening.

The competition has acted as a pleasant distraction from league competition for both sides so far this season and they will be hoping that their dreams of silverware will continue into the semi-finals.

Bristol City won all three of their group stage matches against second tier opposition. The defeated London Bees, Crystal Palace and Lewes to win their group. The Robins have lost both of their last two home fixtures in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League by 4-0 scoreline including a thrashing by Wednesday’s opponents Aston Villa.

Villa boss Gemma Davies missed the opportunity to hand Japanese international forward Mana Iwabuchi her debut at the weekend when the club’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Arsenal was postponed. The player could be in contention to feature against Bristol City.

Davies’ side won their FA Women’s Continental League Cup group after beating runners-up Durham on penalties at Maiden Castle. They previously defeated Sheffield United and Coventry United in their opening two games.

Bristol City’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup quarter-final tie against Aston Villa is scheduled to kick-off at 7.30pm on Wednesday evening and will be available for fans to watch live on the FA Player.
