Manchester United have completed the signing of Norwegian international defender Maria Thorisdottir from Barclays FA Women’s Super League rivals Chelsea.
The 27-year-old full-back had been rumoured to be moving to The Leigh Sports Village over the course of the last week with the deal having today been completed.
Manchester United announced the capture of Thorisdottir via their official website this morning. The player has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with The Red Devils with the option of a further year.
Thorisdottir found her game time with Chelsea extremely limited this season with the likes of Hannah Blundell and Maren Mjelde being preferred in the right-back position while Swedish defender Jonna Andersson has been virtually undroppable on the left side. Thorisdottir has made just two appearances for The Blues in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League while she has been named amongst the substitutes on six occasions.
In her three-and-a-half years in South West London, Thorisdottir made 49 appearances in a Chelsea shirt in all competitions. The player won two Barclays FA Women’s Super League titles, the Women’s FA Cup, the FA Women’s Continental League Cup and the FA Women’s Community Shield.
Thorisdottir becomes Manchester United manager Casey Stoney’s first signing of the current transfer window and she could be in-line to make her debut for the club against Birmingham City on Sunday.
