Ankle injury sustained by Manchester City midfielder to be assessed

Manchester City midfielder Sam Mewis will be assessed by the United States medical team after sustaining an ankle injury in The Stars and Stripes’ 6-0 victory over Colombia in the early hours of this morning.

The 2020 US Soccer Female Player of the Year played the first 68 minutes of the match in Orlando, Florida before being brought off the field by head coach Vlatko Andonovski with the player having suffered an ankle injury.

It was an unfortunate end to the match for Mewis who had created one goal and drew a foul in the box for the penalty kick which resulted in another.

After the match, head coach Andonovski spoke with the media including FA Women’s Super League Full-Time and said that Mewis’ injury would be quickly assessed, although it is hoped that it is nothing serious.

Andonovski said “She is very strong and very tough and when we first asked her about her injury, she said ‘I’m fine’.

“Obviously, we are doing the examinations and following all of the protocols to ensure that she is really fine.

“She’s tough and we don’t know what fine means in her world but pretty soon we will know how she feels.”

With the United States’ January camp having now come to an end, Mewis is expected back at Manchester City. Whether the player is able to play a part in City’s fixture against West Ham United next weekend or in February’s huge fixtures against Arsenal and Manchester United remains to be seen. City fans will certainly have their fingers crossed that any damage to Mewis’ ankle is very minor.
