Manchester City pair Rose Lavelle and Sam Mewis were both involved for the United States as they defeated Colombia 6-0 in an international friendly match at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida this morning.
The pair started the match for The Stars and Stripes with Mewis heavily involved in two of her nation’s goals just four days on from hitting a first career hat-trick for the United States against the same opponents.
Caterina Macario struck the opening goal after just three minutes when she prodded home an Ali Krieger cross before captain Megan Rapinoe’s deflected effort from just inside the box made it 2-0 to the United States with 35 minutes on the clock.
Manchester City midfielder Mewis drew a foul in the Colombia box in the final minute of the first half, allowing Rapinoe to net her second goal of the game from the penalty spot.
Mewis was the provider for the United States’ fourth goal, crossing for Lynn Williams to head home on the hour mark before Lavelle departed in the 63rd minute and Mewis left the field five minutes later after picking up an ankle injury.
Vlatko Andonovski’s side added to their four-goal advantage during the last 20 minutes of the match with Lindsey Horan flicking the ball home from a corner kick and before Carli Lloyd’s dink across the box was nodded in by Margaret Purce as the United States completed their 6-0 rout.
United States head coach Andonovski used 17 members of his 18-player matchday squad with Manchester City’s January transfer window signing Abby Dahlkemper not selected.
