Tottenham Hotspur defender Lucia Leon has re-joined Spanish club Madrid CFF on loan for the remainder of the season according to reports on Spurs’ official website.
The 23-year-old returns to the city of her birth and the team where she played as a youth for before joining Spurs in 2013.
Leon came to London as a striker but has been more widely used as a right-back at Spurs. It was in this position that she featured as part of the Spurs team which won promotion to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League in 2019, making six starts and 11 appearances from the bench in the FA Women’s Championship that season.
Last season, Leon made 11 appearances in all competitions for Spurs and scored in the Women’s FA Cup fifth round victory at Coventry United. This season, she has made a number of appearances mostly in attacking roles on the right wing. Leon scored Tottenham Hotspur’s first-ever league goal against Arsenal in October, heading home a consolation goal in the 6-1 defeat.
In November 2019, Leon was called up to the Spanish Under-23s team for an international training camp in Madrid.
Leon hasn’t featured for Spurs since the arrival of new head coach Rehanne Skinner and so the loan move comes as no big surprise. The young player was given numerous chances under former joint-head coaches Juan Amoros and Karen Hills, though she never really had a run of games in the same position. In her games this season, Leon has all too often found herself in good positions but hasn’t been able to take advantage and make regular attacking contributions to the team.
With Jess Naz returning from injury, Leon’s game time was going to be affected. The player will be hoping that some time away from Spurs will allow her to get a run of games and the opportunity to claim a consistent position for herself.
