Manchester United forward Christen Press was on target for the United States as they defeated Brazil 2-0 in their latest SheBelieves Cup match at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida this evening.
The 32-year-old thumped the ball across goal into the far corner of the Brazilian net after just 11 minutes. The tournament hosts added a further goal late in the second half through Megan Rapinoe as they moved to within touching distance of winning a second consecutive SheBelieves Cup title.
Press started the match on the left side of the United States attack and it was from this area of the pitch where she scored her goal. She cut in from the left and advanced into the Brazilian box before thumping a powerful shot across goal which nestled in the bottom corner of Barbara’s net. Press created and converted her chance so quickly that it seemed to catch the Brazilian keeper by surprise as she was virtually left a spectator.
Brazil went close to equalising matters soon after the game’s opening goal when Debinha played in Ludmila but United States defender Crystal Dunn heroically slid in to block her shot.
Goal action was largely restricted throughout the remainder of the game and the United States had to wait until the 88th minute to seal their victory. Rapinoe connected with the ball on the volley and her effort flew into the Brazilian net. The victory leaves the United States on the verge of yet another SheBelieves Cup title.
Manchester City pair Abby Dahlkemper and Rose Lavelle started the match alongside United’s Press. Lavelle collected her 50th senior cap for the United States less than four years on from making her senior debut for the nation in the same competition.
The United States complete their SheBelieves Cup campaign against Argentina in the early hours of Thursday morning.
