PREVIEW: Atletico Madrid v Chelsea

Chelsea will be looking to confirm their place in the quarter-finals of this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League when they face Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their round of 16 tie on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blues currently lead 2-0 from the first leg while the second leg will take place on neutral territory in Monza, Italy due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Chelsea go into their tie against Atletico without Welsh international Sophie Ingle who is suspended following her dismissal in the first leg. Blues boss Emma Hayes has been assessing the fitness of centre-back Magda Eriksson, although it seems likely that the player will not be fit to feature at the Brianteo Stadium, the home of Italian club AC Monza.

Atletico Madrid go into the second leg on the back of a 4-0 away victory at Real Betis in the Spanish Primera Division Femenina on Sunday. The Chelsea tie signals the start of a big week for Dani Gonzalez’s side with Atletico set to contest a Madrid derby with Real Madrid on Sunday.

Former Blues keeper Hedvig Lindahl is again set to start for Atletico while it is unknown whether former Manchester City winger Toni Duggan will make the starting XI after dropping to the bench against Real Betis at the weekend.

The second leg of Chelsea’s UEFA Women’s Champions League round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid is scheduled to kick-off at 12.30pm on Wednesday afternoon and will be broadcast live on BT Sport 2.
