Manchester City are into the quarter-finals of this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League after cruising to a 5-0 second leg victory over Italian club Fiorentina in Florence this afternoon.
Gareth Taylor’s side were 3-0 up from the first leg and they completed the job off in style at the Stadio Artemio Franchi this afternoon to qualify with an 8-0 aggregate victory.
A lovely flowing move resulted in Ellen White striking home the game’s opening goal after just eight minutes before Caroline Weir soon added another from the penalty spot following a hand ball by home defender Martina Zanoli.
City were to go into the break three goals to the good when Fiorentina gave the ball away and Lauren Hemp nipped in to set up White for her second goal of the game.
City head coach Taylor brought United States international midfielder Sam Mewis on for the second half and she added a fourth City goal on the hour mark when she struck a sweet effort into the net following a powerful drive towards goal.
Mewis completed the scoring 12 minutes from time when she fired home from a Chloe Kelly cross to cap-off at 5-0 victory on the day and an 8-0 success on aggregate.
City will learn of their quarter-final and potential semi-final opponents when the draw for the remainder of the competition is conducted by UEFA tomorrow morning.
