Arsenal defender Leah Williamson will be fit for next weekend’s North London derby says head coach Joe Montemurro.
The 23-year-old centre-back was absent from the Arsenal squad which took on Manchester United at Meadow Park last night with the player having sustained a quad injury in training in midweek.
After beating United 2-0, Arsenal now turn their attentions to next weekend’s North London derby meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and head coach Montemurro says that he expects to have defender Williamson available to him.
“Yeah she will be right,” Montemurro told FAWSL Full-Time after last night’s victory at Meadow Park. “Basically, she picked up a knock and has been suffering with a dead leg which didn’t recover too well.
“In training, there was a bit too much pain, we got it scanned and it was just a little bit of bleeding that didn’t clear.
“We just felt that it wasn’t worth risking with the amount of games left.
“Leah should be back next weekend, no problem.”
Last night’s absence was Williamson’s first of the season in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. The player has featured in all of The Gunners previous 15 games, 14 of her outings have come as starts.
Arsenal will be looking to complete a league double over Spurs next weekend with Montemurro’s side having won the reverse fixture 6-1 at Meadow Park in October. Forward Vivianne Miedema netted a hat-trick for The Gunners while Caitlin Foord helped herself to a brace. Katie McCabe netted the game’s other goal.
