Durham have completed the signing of former Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United full-back Ali Johnson on a free transfer.
The 22-year-old defender joins The Wildcats after most recently turning out for Blackburn Rovers and she could go straight into Lee Sanders’ squad to face her former club Sheffield United at Maiden Castle tomorrow.
Johnson started her youth career with Blackburn Rovers before joining Liverpool’s youth development programme. She returned to Rovers to launch her senior career in 2015 and spent two years with the Lancashire club before rejoining Liverpool where Johnson first tasted top flight football.
After two seasons with The Reds, the player had spells with Bristol City and Sheffield United before again returning to Blackburn Rovers last year.
FAWSL Full-Time were informed of Johnson’s move to Durham via an official club press release this morning and the player says that she is delighted to have joined The Wildcats.
“I’m absolutely delighted and buzzing to get this over the line,” said Johnson. “I can’t wait for the rest of the season and building for next season.
“Everyone has been very welcoming and it’s a very friendly environment to be in.
“I just want to help us push and get the results we need and want in the last three games.”
Durham go into tomorrow’s FA Women’s Championship fixture against Sheffield United three points adrift of league leaders Leicester City while Lee Sanders’ side have played on game more. Anything other than a victory could virtually end the club’s promotion hopes this season.
