Aston Villa forward Mana Iwabuchi netted two goals as Japan defeated Paraguay 7-0 in an international friendly in Sendai City this morning.
The 28-year-old’s brace for Nadeshiko moves her into joint-sixth position in Japan’s all-time goalscoring charts with 31 goals alongside retired attacker Mio Otani. Iwabuchi still has a long way to go to match record goalscorer Homare Sawa’s tally of 83 goals.
Japan took the lead against Paraguay after just six minutes through Moeka Minami. Iwabuchi then netted her first goal just before the half-hour mark. Tania Riso’s unfortunate own goal meant that Japan would go into half-time with a three-goal advantage.
Yuika Sugasawa got her name on the scoresheet seven minutes into the second half before Iwabuchi completed her brace by netting Japan’s fifth goal of the match. The Aston Villa forward was denied the opportunity to score her hat-trick with the player having been substituted just four minutes after notching her second goal.
Japan rounded-off their 7-0 win with two quick-fire goals in second half injury time. First, Yuka Momiki found the back of the net before fellow substitute Mina Tanaka was also on-target just a minute later.
Asako Takakura’s side are in action again in the early hours of Sunday morning when they face Panama in Tokyo.
