Arsenal trio Danielle van de Donk, Jill Roord and Vivianne Miedema and Manchester United midfielder Jackie Groenen all started for The Netherlands as they were defeated 1-0 by Spain in an international friendly match in Marbella this evening.
Sarina Wiegman’s side had won all of their last six matches in all competitions but that run came to an end this evening as they were beaten by an ever-improving Spanish side.
It was a dominant performance from Spain who took the game to their opponents and built a series of impressive attacks. Jorge Vilda’s side netted the only goal of the game just after the half-hour mark when defender Andrea Pereira teed up Patricia Guijarro to score.
Over the course of the 90 minutes, Spain registered 20 shots on goal against the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 runners-up. In contrast, Spanish goalkeeper Sandra Panos was untested throughout the match in what was an off-colour performance from the Dutch.
Spain will look to build on what was their seventh consecutive victory this evening when they face Mexico in their second friendly match in Marbella on Tuesday. The Netherlands will face Australia in Nijmegen on the same evening as they look to quickly move on from tonight’s rare defeat.
