A much-changed Chelsea side cruised to a 5-0 victory over London City Lionesses at Kingsmeadow this evening in a Vitality Women’s FA Cup fourth round tie.
Blues boss Emma Hayes made six changes to her starting XI but it made little difference as Chelsea eased beyond Melissa Phillips’ Lionesses.
The first half saw the visitors defend resolutely but they were ultimately undone by three superb goals. Chelsea had hit the woodwork three times before Hannah Blundell threaded a fine pass through to Niamh Charles and the England international went on the steer the ball beyond the onrushing Shae Yanez in the London City Lionesses goal.
Seven minutes later, it was 2-0 when Erin Cuthbert’s corner kick to the back post was met by Jess Carter who expertly directed the ball into the net.
The scoreline seemed a little harsh on a hard-working London City Lionesses side and Chelsea delivered yet another knockout blow 10 minutes before the break when Melanie Leupolz unleashed a 25-yard rocket which nestled in the far corner of Yanez’s net.
Chelsea added a fourth goal 12 minutes into the second half when Charles’ low pass was guided into the net by Drew Spence before the same player saw an effort from the edge of the box tipped over by the quick-thinking Yanez.
Spence was to get her second goal later in the half when she curled home from a Beth England cut-back. England went close to adding her name to the scoresheet herself moments later but Yanez raced out of her goal to push her shot away from danger as the tie ended 5-0 in Chelsea’s favour.
The Blues will now host Everton or Durham in the fifth round with that tie taking place on the weekend of 15-16 May.
