‘We will treat this weekend like a cup final’ says Chelsea boss Hayes ahead of Reading clash

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes says that Sunday’s fixture against Reading is their cup final with The Blues looking to secure their second successive Barclays FA Women’s Super League title.

With Manchester City only two points behind Chelsea, Gareth Taylor’s side take on West Ham United in their final game on Sunday, a fixture where they are expected to record a victory. Chelsea’s task is clear, they have to beat Reading at Kingsmeadow to secure the title for a second year in a row.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s game in a press conference in which FAWSL Full-Time were present, Hayes commented on how important the game is for her side against a mid-table Reading team.

She commented “This weekend is a cup final for us and I’ll approach it as such. We have to simply win the game.

“As coaches, we want everything. Some people have played a lot of football in recent weeks and the win over Spurs was another real credit to the whole squad.

“The Bayern game a week ago took a lot out of us emotionally, so I was wondering what our performance would be like against Spurs but I was pleased with how we got stuck in and recorded the win.”

Wednesday’s win at The Hive was big step for Chelsea as they look to record a first-ever quadruple something which Hayes said was down to all of her players and coaching team pulling together this season.

She added “It’s why I’ve always said the team that goes furthest in Europe has the hardest chance to win the league.

“The fact that we are in this position and in the final of the Champions League is a real testament to not just my squad, but the backroom staff. They are the people that keep everyone on the pitch and that’s why we are here.

“We need to beat Reading then it will be a job well done and the whole squad deserve a lot of credit for how they have approached this season.”

Chelsea’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Reading kicks-off at 2.30pm on Sunday and will be screened live on BT Sport 2.
