German international defender Maier confirms Arsenal departure

German international defender Leonie Maier has confirmed that she is leaving Arsenal this summer.

The 28-year-old Stuttgart-born full-back has spent the last two years with The Gunners but she has now opted to move on.

Maier confirmed her Arsenal exit earlier today in a post on her personal Instagram account.

The defender joined Arsenal off the back of a six-year spell with German club Bayern Munich. Maier has been a member of an Arsenal side which reached the FA Women’s Continental League Cup final and the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League last season.

In her time at Meadow Park, Maier has represented Arsenal on 25 occasions in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League but just 12 of those outings have come as starts. The player has started a greater percentage of her games in the cup competitions.

Commenting on her departure in her Instagram statement, Maier said “Thank you for everything and for an unforgettable time.

“I will leave Arsenal. I am thankful and happy that I was part of this amazing club. I have had a really good time and have met so many great people and it was a pleasure to work with so many talented players. Also, a big thank you to the coaches, the staff and the fans who always backed us no matter what.

“I wish the whole team all the best for the future and I am going to miss you but all the nice memories will always stay in my mind.”

Maier will become the second player to leave Arsenal this summer with teammate Jill Roord having already sealed a move to VfL Wolfsburg.
