Manchester City midfielder Coombs signs new two-year deal

Manchester City midfielder Laura Coombs has agreed a new two-year contract with the club according to reports on The Cityzens’ official website.

The 30-year-old Gravesend-born midfielder has proved to be a useful member of Gareth Taylor’s squad this season both from the start of games and when being introduced from the bench.

With Manchester City head coach Taylor having held talks with a number of players over their futures in recent weeks, the club have today announced that Coombs has agreed to remain at The Academy Stadium for two more years. The midfielder becomes the first player to sign a contract extension at Manchester City during the close season.

Coombs made 13 appearances for Manchester City in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League this season as the club finished the campaign as runners-up to eventual champions Chelsea. The player netted two league goals, including a crucial goal in her side’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United at The Leigh Sports Village in November.

Coombs initially struggled for game time when new head coach Taylor first arrived at the club last summer but a superb performance in a 3-0 win at Liverpool in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup in early November impressed her coach and she has featured more regularly ever since.

Upon signing her new deal, Coombs told official Manchester City sources “It feels great to have signed a new contract here at City – it was an easy choice for me to make. I feel settled and happy, both on and off the pitch, so it was a natural decision for me to stay

“It’s an amazing environment to be a part of – we are treated like ultimate professionals and as players, we can’t ask for anything more.

“In my first season, I felt as though it was a bit of an adjustment period for me but this past year, I think I’ve shown what I can bring to the team, both technically and tactically, and doing that within such a high-quality squad has been amazing.

“Moving forward though, I’m determined to keep on developing and improving to help the team.”
