Arsenal trio amongst seven English-based players selected by Australia

Arsenal trio Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Lydia Williams are amongst seven English-based players selected to represent Australia next month.

The Westfield Matildas have arranged international friendlies in Europe against Denmark and Sweden. The games will form part of Australia’s preparations for the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.

Football Australia informed FAWSL Full-Time of head coach Tony Gustavsson’s squad selection earlier this morning in an official press release. In total, seven English-based players were selected. In addition to Arsenal trio Catley, Foord and Williams, Gustavsson has selected West Ham United pair Mackenzie Arnold and Tameka Yallop, Chelsea’s Sam Kerr and Everton’s Hayley Raso.

Arsenal goalkeeper Williams goes into the latest camp one cap short of her 90th for the Westfield Matildas while another potential appearance landmark could be achieved by Everton’s Raso who is just two outings short of her 50th for her country. Former West Ham United midfielder Emily van Egmond is  set to collect her 100th cap.

The Australia squad will meet in Sweden from 6 June. They will then cross the water to take on Denmark in Horsens on Thursday 10 June before facing Sweden in Kalmar on Tuesday 15 June.

Head coach Gustavsson is expected to trim down his squad to just 18 players for the Olympic Games after the June camp.
