Liverpool defender Niamh Fahey could move to within five appearances of a century of Republic of Ireland senior caps with the player having been selected in Vera Pauw’s latest squad for this month’s camp.
The Republic of Ireland will take on Iceland in an international friendly double-header in Reykjavik this month as the nation prepare for the start of FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying in September.
Defender Fahey is currently sat on 93 caps but she could have the opportunity to add two more to her collection against an Iceland side ranked 17th in the world.
The Football Association of Ireland announced head coach Pauw’s 23-player squad via an official press release to FAWSL Full-Time. Fahey is one of four English-based players selected in the squad. The player is joined in the group by Reading goalkeeper Grace Moloney, Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Megan Connolly and Arsenal forward Katie McCabe. Birmingham City defender Harriet Scott would surely have made the selection but she is unavailable.
The Republic of Ireland will take on Iceland on Friday 11 June and then again on Tuesday 15 June. The nation’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying campaign starts with an away fixture in Georgia on 17 September.
