Arsenal have received a significant boost with defender Leah Williamson having signed a new contract with the club.
The 24-year-old England international centre-back was set to become a free agent at the end of this month but it has today been confirmed by Arsenal that the player has committed her future to the club.
Williamson has spent the last 15 years with Arsenal after joining the club’s Centre of Excellence as a nine-year-old. The player went on to make her senior debut for The Gunners in 2014 and she has never looked back. Williamson has won the Barclays FA Women’s Super League title in her time as a senior Arsenal player, along with two Women’s FA Cups and two FA Women’s Continental League Cups.
This season, Williamson has featured in 20 of Arsenal’s 22 matches in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. She scored her only league goal in the 9-1 win at West Ham United in September.
Upon signing her new deal, Williamson said “I’ve signed because I’ve always said that this is my club. I say it’s a fairytale that I’m still here, I have won trophies and we’ve continued to compete for trophies, that’s really important to me and I think that I owe the club as well for everything they’ve given to me, and it’s time for me to give back to them.”
Williamson has been away at an international training camp with England and she will next link-up with Team GB ahead of next month’s Olympic Games.
