Former Arsenal defender Leonie Maier has joined Everton on a two-year deal according to reports on The Blue Girls’ official website.
The 28-year-old Stuttgart-born full-back moves to Walton Hall Park after leaving former club Arsenal at the end of last season.
Maier was a two-time Frauen-Bundesliga winner with former club Bayern Munich while she has twice won the UEFA Women’s Championship with Germany at Under-17 and Under-19 levels. At senior level, Maier has been capped on 78 occasions by the Germans.
After completing her move to Everton, Maier said “I’m really happy to join this Club. Everton is a big club with a lot of history.
“I’m really looking forward to being able to play for this club, playing with my new teammates and working with the staff.
“It was time to experience something new. I was very impressed by Everton with how they play football. I’m a player who likes to play football, to play in possession and to attack. I feel Everton are playing that style of football.
“I think we have a great team and, in addition to the new signings, I think we can achieve something.”
Maier spent two years with previous club Arsenal. She made 25 appearances for The Gunners in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League while she was a member of the side which reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2019/2020. Her European experience will be important for Everton as they look to return to the UEFA Women’s Champions League themselves in the future.
