A brace from Ellen White helped Team GB to a 2-0 victory over Chile in Sapporo this morning.
White struck from close range in both halves as Hege Riise’s side got their Olympic Games off to a winning start.
Team GB started well in humid conditions in Japan and White thought she had scored after just 11 minutes but she fired home from an offside position after Georgia Stanway’s initial effort had been spilt by Chilean keeper Christiane Endler.
Riise’s side would soon go on to break the deadlock. Lucy Bronze’s cross was headed back into danger by Lauren Hemp at the back post and White swept the ball in.
White went close to doubling Team GB’s advantage just before the break when she was found by Hemp’s low pass but she didn’t have the time and space to squeeze the ball beyond Endler.
The Manchester City forward was again in the thick of it early in the second half. Stanway saw a shot saved but the ball tricked towards White just a few yards out. The forward looked certain to score but she was denied by a last-ditch tackle. The referee checked the incident using VAR but nothing came from the review.
Team GB made sure of the points with a little under 20 minutes to go when Bronze found White who acrobatically directed the ball into the net to score both her’s and her team’s second goal.
Riise’s side’s attentions now turn to Saturday when they face tournament hosts Japan in their second group match.
