Former Manchester United defender McManus joins Leicester City

Former Manchester United defender Abbie McManus has joined newly-promoted Leicester City according to reports on The Foxes’ official website.

The 28-year-old Prestwich-born centre-back left former club Manchester United earlier this week at the end of her contract. The player was tipped to move to Leicester City therefore today’s news comes as no surprise.

McManus spent two years at Manchester United after joining the club from neighbours Manchester City in summer 2019. The player made 16 appearances for the club in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. She spent the second half of last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur.

After completing her move to Leicester City, McManus said “I’m excited to meet the staff, players and obviously ready to get started.

“Walking in, you can tell that the facilities are unreal and it’s exciting to be a part of something that is just for the women, so it’s incredible.”

McManus becomes Leicester City boss Jonathan Morgan’s sixth signing of the summer. The defender joins former Manchester United teammate Jess Sigsworth in the East Midlands. McManus is the third defensive addition made by The Foxes. The club have also acquired the services of former Bristol City full-back Jemma Purfield and former Everton and Birmingham City defender Georgia Brougham.
