Leicester City defender Holly Morgan has announced her retirement from playing at the age of 28 as reported on the club’s official website.
The centre-back has spent 17 years with The Foxes, helping the club climb the footballing pyramid in the process.
Morgan made 35 appearances for Leicester City during their three years in the second tier. She has played a key role for the club both on and off the field but she has determined that the time is now right to hang up her boots.
News of Morgan’s retirement was announced today with the player set to take up a coaching role with Leicester City.
Speaking after the announcement, Morgan said “For the past two years it’s been something I’ve been thinking about and during that time I’ve been happy with the contribution I’ve been able to provide for the first team. However, I think it was just the right time for me to now look at what else I’m passionate about, and that’s coaching. I feel in myself that I’ve achieved what I wanted to, playing wise, and now I want to contribute to Leicester City in a different capacity and that’s as a first team coach.
“Alongside being first team captain, I’m also very proud of having a pivotal role within LCFC Women’s Academy set up, managing and coordinating the pathway for the past two-and-a-half years. I’m incredibly proud of the contribution I have made towards the progress and development of the Academy, leading the programme alongside playing.
“Working with an array of players, I’m delighted to have overseen five players making it onto the England pathway, with three making England youth appearances. It is now an incredibly exciting time for the academy with the support and guidance of Leicester City Football Club and I’m delighted to have been part of its progress and development up to this point.”
Morgan now begins her career as a first team coach with The Foxes with the defender holding a UEFA A coaching licence.
