UEFA have today revealed that Chelsea trio Ann-Katrin Berger, Magda Eriksson and Ji So-yun have been nominated for awards for their performances in their respective positions in last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League.
The Blues reached the UEFA Women’s Champions League final for the very first time in the club’s history in 2020/2021 before going down 4-0 to Barcelona in Gothenburg.
UEFA have today released a 12-player shortlist for their UEFA Women’s Champions League Player of the Season awards for the goalkeeping, defensive, midfield and attacking positions with three Chelsea players featuring amongst the nominees.
Goalkeeper Berger is up for the goalkeeping award alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Christiane Endler and Barcelona’s Sandra Paños. She kept three clean sheets in eight appearances and came up with some big saves when called upon.
Captain Eriksson has been nominated for the defender award. She has been listed alongside Barcelona’s Mapi Léon and Irene Parades of Paris Saint-Germain. Despite only starting five competition matches, Eriksson provided great leadership for The Blues and put in some big performances, particularly in the two games against VfL Wolfsburg and in the semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich.
South Korean international Ji is the final Chelsea nominee. She is up for the midfield award with Barcelona pair Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas. Ji netted once in eight appearances for Chelsea in last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League, however, it was her creativity for her teammates which saw her make a real impact.
The award winners will be announced by UEFA on Thursday 26 August.
