Experienced former Charlton Athletic defender Coombs joins Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace have completed the signing of experienced defender Grace Coombs following her recent release by Charlton Athletic.

The 30-year-old centre-back left The Oakwood as an Addicks legend in the summer after making over 250 senior appearances for the club in a Charlton Athletic career which has spanned the best part of two decades.

It has today been confirmed that Coombs will remain in the FA Women’s Championship this season after joining Crystal Palace. The player’s arrival at Hayes Lane was confirmed by the club in a post on their official Twitter account.

Coombs looks to be an excellent fit for her new club. The player captained her former side and those leadership skills will be hugely important for a Crystal Palace side who are aiming to put their defensive woes of the last couple of seasons behind them. The Eagles had the third-worst defensive record in the FA Women’s Championship last season but if they improve that statistic, they have the quality in attack to really push on up the table.

During her three years playing in the second tier with Charlton Athletic, Coombs made 48 appearances. She helped The Addicks to record 12 clean sheets in those outings and she so nearly gained promotion to the top flight with the club in 2018/2019.

Coombs could make her Crystal Palace debut when The Eagles take on Bristol City at Hayes Lane on Sunday in their FA Women’s Championship opener.
