PREVIEW: Blackburn Rovers v Sheffield United

Sheffield United will be looking to prove that they are capable of mounting another promotion push in the FA Women’s Championship when they travel to Blackburn Rovers this afternoon.

The South Yorkshire outfit have finished in the top five positions in every year since coming into the FA Women’s Championship in 2018 but they are yet to secure that elusive place in the top flight.

Blackburn Rovers go into the new season looking to better their position from last term. The Lancashire club finished ninth, seven points above relegated side London Bees.

Rovers will be eager to end their 12-game winless run from last year’s campaign on the opening day, their last victory coming on 22 November when they won 1-0 at Coventry United courtesy of a second half Elise Hughes goal.

Sheffield United come into this one knowing that they are unbeaten in all five fixtures played against Gemma Donnelly’s Rovers side since the two teams first met during the 2019/2020 season. Their most recent triumph was secured by a last gasp Jade Pennock goal in a 2-1 win for The Blades in Bamber Bridge on the final day of last season.

It could be a case of being reunited with familiar faces for Blackburn Rovers’ Chloe Dixon and Sheffield United’s Charlotte Newsham if they are to make their debuts in this opening day clash, with both players plying their trade for the opposition in the season just gone.

Blackburn Rovers’ FA Women’s Championship fixture against Sheffield United kicks-off at 2pm this afternoon.
