PREVIEW: Real Madrid v Manchester City

Manchester City get their new season underway against Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League Round 2 tie at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The two clubs were paired as two seeded sides in the Round 2 draw and they are set to contest a fascinating battle to determine who reaches the group stage of the competition.

Real Madrid will play in their first-ever European tie against Manchester City. The Whites are into just their second season with the club having only taken over fellow Madrid-based side CD Tacón in summer 2020.

Former Manchester City forward Kosovare Asllani is unavailable for her current club after testing positive for COVID-19 while Spanish attacker Marta Cardona is out with a knee injury.

Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor has a number of injury concerns to contend with as his side begin a new European adventure. Chloe Kelly remains sidelined along with full-back Lucy Bronze and forward Ellen White. Taylor confirmed in his pre-match press conference that goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck hasn’t travelled with the squad to Spain with the player nursing a minor calf problem. Veteran keeper Karen Bardsley is set to deputise.

The UEFA Women’s Champions League Round 2 first leg tie between Real Madrid and Manchester City is scheduled to kick-off at 8pm on Tuesday evening and will be available for fans to stream live on City+.
