Birmingham City boss Booth expecting an open encounter with Spurs

Birmingham City head coach Scott Booth believes that this afternoon’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be an open affair.

Both clubs go into the new season with new identities with no less that 24 new additions having been made between them over the summer.

Some may expect this afternoon’s fixture to be a scrappy one with both teams needing time to gel, however, Birmingham City boss Booth is expecting the contest to be open.

“It’s going to be an occasion, a fantastic stadium to go and play in;” Booth told FAWSL Full-Time in his pre-match press conference. “It’s two clubs with quite a lot of changes but I think it might be a pretty open game to be honest. It’s nice to start well, get points on the board, have some nice things to say to the players post-match and build that understanding and positivity.

“It’s all to play for. Sometimes that means that it will be scrappy but we will wait and see.”

A bumper crowd is expected at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, although the anticipated attendance is unknown. Booth went on to say that his players will not be overcome by the occasion and they are simply excited to get started.

He added “They’re just looking forward to it to be honest. Nothing will be decided from this one game so that’s quite nice for the players to go into an occasion like this at a great stadium on the first day of the season.

“They’ve done their pre-season work and they just want to get on the pitch and show what they can do.”

The Birmingham City squad is made up of a real mix of experience and youth. Booth is expecting the experienced heads in the squad to do their jobs and if they perform well, he believes that everything else to fit into place.

“It’s really important that throughout the squad we have got good experience in all departments;” he said. “We’ve also got some young players in there so for me, that works, it’s a good fit.

“I expect them to play well and if they are playing well and giving us what we need from them, goals, chances and assists will come.

“The experienced players know their jobs so I don’t need to do too much work with them at times, that’s the benefit of having good experience in the squad.”

Birmingham City’s opening day fixture against Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium kicks-off at 3pm.
