The Carla Ward era at Aston Villa officially gets underway this afternoon when her side take on newly-promoted Leicester City in their opening Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture at The Banks’s Stadium.
Ward joined Villa in the summer after spending last season at Second City neighbours Birmingham City and she is targeting some real progress at her new club.
Villa go into their first match of the season with some COVID issues while a couple of players have been carrying knocks. Head coach Ward has added 10 players to the squad over the summer therefore a number of those signings will make their debuts this afternoon. This week’s new additions Ruesha Littlejohn and Gemma Davison could be involved, although Emily Gielnik only arrived on Thursday and is unlikely to have the necessary international clearance to feature.
Leicester City manager Jonathan Morgan has no knew injury concerns to deal with, although he admits that one or two players will miss the match with minor knocks. Attacker Paige Bailey-Gayle could make her return following her injury at the end of last season while up to seven summer signings could be given their debuts.
The Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture between Aston Villa and Leicester City kicks-off at 12.30pm. Card only admission will be available on the turnstiles priced at £10 adults, £7.50 under-18s and £5 over 65s and under-14s.
