Manchester City ease to four-goal victory over Everton at Goodison

Manchester City have made an excellent start to the new Barclays FA Women’s Super League season, beating Everton 4-0 at Goodison Park this afternoon.

Vicky Losada, Janine Beckie, Khadija Shaw and Steph Houghton got the goals for Gareth Taylor’s side as they took full advantage of some sloppy Everton marking to collect what turned out to be a simple three points.

Kenza Dali scuffed an early shot wide for Everton but Manchester City soon got some control of the game, taking advantage of the spaces offered out wide by their opponents’ fragile defensive system.

Beckie forced Sandy MacIver into an early save before the England keeper pushed a Hayley Raso delivery onto the bar.

The Cityzens would soon take the lead when Caroline Weir’s low ball deflected into the feet of Losada and the Spaniard found the corner of the Everton net.

Beckie would soon go on to deservedly get her name on the scoresheet as she was given the freedom of Goodison to drive through the field and fire a low shot into the far corner before Shaw made it 3-0 with a tap-in with just 38 minutes on the clock.

Everton were more solid in the second half and Danielle Turner called Manchester City keeper Karima Benameur Taieb into life when her looping cross had to be pushed to safety over the bar.

At the other end, Beckie saw a deflected effort land in the gloves of MacIver before the same player cut in and stuck a shot which came back off the bar and the post.

Manchester City ended the game as 4-0 winners thanks to a stunning Houghton free-kick. The City captain lifted the ball over the Everton wall and it nestled perfectly in the top corner with MacIver rooted to her line.

Taylor’s side will now look ahead to their UEFA Women’s Champions League Round 2 second leg tie against Real Madrid at The Academy Stadium in midweek while Everton’s next match is at champions Chelsea next Sunday.
