Chelsea pair Berger and Leupolz named in German squad for upcoming qualifiers

Chelsea pair Ann-Katrin Berger and Melanie Leupolz have been included in Martina Voss-Tecklenberg’s 24-player German squad for their upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Serbia.

The Germans face Bulgaria in Cottbus on Saturday 18 September before taking on Serbia in Chemnitz on Tuesday 21 September.

The German Football Association, the DFB, announced head coach Voss-Tecklenberg’s 24-player squad via their official website earlier today with Chelsea pair Berger and Leupolz having been included. Everton defender Leonie Maier is a notable absentee with the player currently struggling with an injury.

Berger will be aiming to add to her two senior caps during the upcoming international window while Chelsea teammate Leupolz is currently sitting on 70 senior caps, she also has 11 goals to her name for her country.

Germany have been present at all of the previous eight FIFA Women’s World Cups. They were world champions in 2003 and 2007. Their exit at the quarter-final stage in France in 2019 was their joint-worst performance at the tournament finals.

Voss-Tecklenberg’s side will be the red hot favourites to qualify from their group for the latest tournament. In addition to facing Bulgaria and Serbia, Germany will also take on Isreal, Turkey and Portugal in the coming months.
