Manchester United trio amongst 13 English-based stars named in Scotland squad

Manchester United trio Kirsty Smith, Kirsty Hanson and Martha Thomas are amongst 13 English-based players to be selected by Scotland.

Pedro Martinez Losa’s side begin their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying campaign later this month with matches against Hungary in Budapest on Friday 17 September and against the Faroe Islands in Glasgow on Tuesday 21 September.

Spaniard Losa has selected his first Scotland squad since being appointed into the role in July. His 23-player squad was unveiled earlier this morning by The Scottish Football Association on their official website.

Manchester United are the best represented English club in the squad with Smith, Hanson and Thomas having all been included while Everton have two players selected, those being Lucy Graham and Claire Emslie. Other English-based players to make the cut are Eartha Cumings (Charlton Athletic), Jen Beattie (Arsenal), Sophie Howard (Leicester City), Chloe Arthur (Aston Villa), Lisa Robertson (Birmingham City), Lisa Evans (West Ham United), Caroline Weir (Manchester City) and Erin Cuthbert (Chelsea).

Scotland made their FIFA Women’s World Cup debut in France in 2019 but the exited the tournament at the group stage. They will be keen to have a second opportunity to play in the biggest tournament in international football in two years’ time.
