Leicester City ace Cain receives first senior call-up to Welsh squad

Leicester City forward Hannah Jade Cain has received her first senior call-up to the Welsh national team for this month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifiers.

Gemma Grainger’s side host Kazakhstan in Llanelli on Friday 17 September before taking on Estonia in Parnu on Tuesday 21 September.

The Welsh Football Association, the FAW, announced head coach Grainger’s 26-player squad via their official website this morning with Leicester City attacker Cain being the only debutant in the side.

Arksey-born Cain had previously represented Wales at Under-16 and Under-17 levels. She switched her allegiances to England in 2014 and went on to play for The Young Lionesses in their Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 age groups. Cain returns to the Welsh setup seven years on from last representing The Red Dragons.

The Welsh squad is dominated by English-based players with 22 members of the squad playing their football over the border. There is a fairly even split between representatives from the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship with 12 members of the Welsh squad playing in the English top flight and 10 in the second tier.

Wales are bidding to qualify for a first major tournament finals when they get their qualification campaign for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 underway later this month.
