Manchester City pair withdraw from international duty through injury

Manchester City pair Caroline Weir and Esme Morgan have been ruled out of action for their respective nations in the upcoming international window through injury.

Weir has pulled out of the Scotland squad with a minor knee injury while defender Morgan will not be linking up with England after she was stretched off in Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at The Academy Stadium last night.

Both Football Associations confirmed the withdrawals earlier today. Hibernian midfielder Rachael Boyle has replaced Weir in the Scotland squad while it has been confirmed that England boss Sarina Wiegman will not bolster her squad following the withdrawal of Morgan.

Winger Hayley Raso was also a notable absentee for Manchester City last night with the player nursing a shoulder injury. She is due to link up with The Commonwealth Bank Matildas later this month for their friendly match against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin but it is not yet known whether she will be fit to report for camp.

Scotland and England begin their respective FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying campaigns this week. Scotland travel to Hungary on Friday while England host North Macedonia at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton on the same day.
