Chelsea midfielder Ji So-yun has become the all-time record goalscorer for South Korea after scoring in her nation’s 12-0 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifying victory over Mongolia earlier today.
The 30-year-old’s 35th-minute strike was her 59th for her country as she claimed the historic title of being the nation’s record goalscorer.
It was a case of goals, goals and more goals for South Korea as they simply blew away a Mongolian side who are some way below them in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings. Choo Hyo-joo’s goal opened the scoring after just four minutes before Barclays FA Women’s Super League pair Cho So-hyun and Lee Guem-min added their names to the scoresheet in the first half-hour. Lee Min-a then quickly scored South Korea’s fourth goal before Ji notched her record-breaking strike.
There was still time for South Korea to add two more goals before the break. Lee and Choo both doubled their individual tallies for the match as Colin Bell’s side went into the interval seven goals to the good.
The second half was a little better for Mongolia but they still conceded a further five goals. Cho completed her brace before Moon Mi-ra scored twice in quick succession. Park Ye-eun’s goal made it 11-0 before Moon completed both the scoring and her personal hat-trick late in the game.
South Korea face Uzbekistan in their next 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifier on Thursday.
