Birmingham City defender Suttie suffers cruel ACL blow

Young Birmingham City defender Arabella Suttie faces a significant spell on the sidelines after sustaining an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury the club have confirmed.

The teenager is understood to have sustained the injury during a club training session and she will now need surgery to correct the problem followed by a long period of rehabilitation. The player is likely to miss the remainder of the season.

Suttie only joined Birmingham City earlier this month. She moved to St Andrew’s following a spell playing WSL Academy football with Barclays FA Women’s Super League champions Chelsea. The defender made her Birmingham City debut as a second half substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the opening day of the season.

News of Suttie’s likely season-ending injury comes as a blow for Birmingham City boss Scott Booth with his side having conceded six goals in their opening two Barclays FA Women’s Super League games. Developing defensive consistency and solidity will be key to getting the Blues up and running this season but Booth now has one less option available to him.

Birmingham City continue the new campaign against Everton at Walton Hall Park on Saturday lunchtime.
