England will be hoping to make it two wins out of two in FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying when they travel to Luxembourg on Tuesday evening.
The Lionesses defeated North Macedonia 8-0 in their opening qualifying match at St Mary’s Stadium on Friday evening and they now come up against a Luxembourg side who rank just nine places higher in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.
Luxembourg started their qualifying campaign with a 4-0 defeat at Northern Ireland. Daniel Santos’ side were 3-0 down before half-time in Larne while they showed some ill discipline with Luxembourg having picked up five cautions including one for each member of the back-four.
Luxembourg lined-up in a 4-5-1 formation against Northern Ireland with wingers Kimberley Dos Santos and Julie Marques Abreu pushing on to join sole forward Marta Estevez Garcia in attack, although in truth, they never made any impression on the opposition goal. Head coach Santos could set up deeper to try to stem to flow of England’s attacks on Tuesday evening.
England head coach Sarina Wiegman will again name Leah Williamson as her stand-in captain with Steph Houghton having withdrawn through injury. Chelsea forward Fran Kirby is fit to play if called upon, although head coach Wiegman has remained tight-lipped on who will start against Luxembourg.
The Lionesses had 48 shots on goal against North Macedonia on Friday but they converted just eight. Wiegman is calling on her side to be more clinical on goal in Luxembourg City in their second match.
England’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier against Luxembourg kicks-off at 7.15pm and will be broadcast live on ITV4.
