Chelsea forward Sam Kerr says that she is excited to join the Australian national team’s ‘100 club’.
The 28-year-old is expected to collect her 100th senior international cap for The Commonwealth Bank Matildas this evening when they take on the Republic of Ireland at the Tallaght Stadium in Dublin.
Speaking to Football Media Australia ahead of the match, Kerr said that it is always a real honour to pull on her country’s famous gold jersey and she is excited to join the roll of honour of players with 100 caps.
“Any time that you get the opportunity to represent your country and play with this group of girls is an amazing honour;” Kerr said. “It is something that I don’t take lightly.
“I’m a little bit sad that some of my buddies can’t be here for it, I pretty much played the full 100 with them but I am sure that there will be many more games to celebrate all of our 100s, we’ve had so many over the past few years. It’s exciting to join the club.”
Australia’s head coach Tony Gustavsson has named six uncapped players in his squad while another six players have less than 10 senior caps. Despite this evening’s game potentially being the start of a new Australian cycle, Kerr says that the team have one thing on their minds.
She said “Win, any time we come into an international game we want to win.
“It is not really about a new cycle for us, I know that word keeps being thrown around but for us, it is about winning, that is what the national team is all about.
“There are a few new faces so it has been a bit different, we have had a bit of a different camp with some testing and getting the new girls used to it but the last few days have been good and we are looking forward to the game.”
Given the short period of time between the end of the Olympic Games and the start of the new Barclays FA Women’s Super League season, Kerr has had little time to rest but she remains in good shape.
“I only had two weeks off so it wasn’t enough to be honest, I could have had longer;” the forward said. “I have been back in with Chelsea playing games so I feel ready to go.”
Australia’s international friendly against the Republic of Ireland kicks-off at 7pm.
