Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United players selected in Dutch squad

Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema, Chelsea’s Aniek Nouwen and Manchester United’s Jackie Groenen have been called-up by The Netherlands for this month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifiers.

The Orange Lionesses take on Cyprus in Larnaca on Friday 22 October before travelling to Minsk to face Belarus on Tuesday 26 October.

The Dutch Football Association, the KNVB, announced head coach Mark Parsons’ 24-player squad earlier today with Barclays FA Women’s Super League representation coming from three clubs.

Arsenal forward Miedema is in the squad after beginning her second century of international caps in the September window while Chelsea defender Nouwen and Manchester United midfielder Groenen also feature, the latter being just three caps short of her 80th at senior level.

The Netherlands started their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying campaign by collecting four points from their opening two games last month. They had to come from behind to draw 1-1 in their opening match against a spirited Czech Republic side in Groningen before defeating Iceland 2-0 in Reykjavík in their second game.

The Orange Lionesses have a good recent record when it comes to major tournament finals. The Netherlands were victorious in their home EUROs back in 2017 while they reached a first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup final in France in 2019. After securing their place at UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, Parsons’ side will be keen to add their name to the list of final participants at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.
