Birmingham City head coach Scott Booth says that participation in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup will be refreshing for his players.
The Blues get their involvement in this season’s competition underway when they face Brighton & Hove Albion at St Andrew’s on Wednesday. Booth’s side also have games against West Ham United and London City Lionesses in the group stage.
When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time ahead of the Brighton & Hove Albion game, Booth said that the FA Women’s Continental League Cup will act as a refreshing change for his players following a gruelling start to the season in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
“Tough but I’m looking forward to the games, they’ll be competitive,” Booth said. “I think that it is quite nice to have the cup competitions come in because it’s refreshing for the players, a bit different. We are looking forward to the Brighton game.
Birmingham City have one of the smaller squads in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League while the club also have a number of young players on their books. It could be questioned whether the additional domestic cup games will help or hinder the Blues’ cause, however, Booth says that the players simply want to play football matches.
He said “It is undoubtedly tough when you don’t have a big squad and you have a lot of younger players in that squad that predominantly don’t get a lot of game time. That then puts the burden on a smaller group of players to play in these games, particularly if you have three games in a week which we recently had with the Chelsea cup game. We’ve seen that already, we’ve been involved in it and we know how tough it is and the players understand that.
“It doesn’t make it any easier but at the same time, players like to play football matches, they prefer to do that than train so I don’t think that there will be any complaints.”
