Everton forward Magill returns to Northern Ireland squad for England and Austria fixtures

Everton forward Simone Magill has received a recall to the Northern Ireland squad for this month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifiers against England and Austria.

Magill missed the September fixtures against Luxembourg and Latvia with an injury which has severely disrupted her start to the new season.

The player is yet to make an appearance for her club this season but she is expected to be fit enough to be part of the Northern Ireland squad which will come together in the next few days to prepare for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying fixtures against England and Austria later this month.

Magill is one of five players from the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship to be selected in Northern Ireland head coach Kenny Shiels’ 23-player squad. The attacker is joined in the squad by Lewes defender Rebecca McKenna, Birmingham City’s Rebecca Holloway, Durham’s Sarah McFadden and Liverpool midfielder Rachel Furness.

Northern Ireland will cross the water to take on England at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 23 October before hosting Austria on Tuesday 26 October. The Green and White Army won both of their September qualifiers against Luxembourg and Latvia, however, Shiels’ side face two significantly tougher tests this month.
