Manchester City defender Kennedy in-line for 100th cap after being named in Australia squad

Manchester City defender Alanna Kennedy could win her 100th senior international cap for Australia this month with the player having today been named in head coach Tony Gustavsson’s 23-player squad.

The Commonwealth Bank Matildas will face Brazil in back-to-back matches at the CommBank Stadium in Sydney on Saturday 23 October and Tuesday 26 October.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of Australia head coach Gustavsson’s 23-player squad via an official press release earlier today with Kennedy one of eight Barclays FA Women’s Super League players included.

The defender is currently sat on 99 caps for her country meaning that an appearance in either of the games against Brazil will see Kennedy become Australia’s latest centurion. She will become the 11th player to reach the milestone and the sixth member of the current crop of Commonwealth Bank Matildas to achieve the feat.

The other English-based players named in Gustavsson’s squad are goalkeepers Mackenzie Arnold (West Ham United) and Lydia Williams (Arsenal), defender Steph Catley (Arsenal), midfielder Tameka Yallop (West Ham United) and forwards Kyah Simon (Tottenham Hotspur), Sam Kerr (Chelsea) and Caitlin Foord (Arsenal). Manchester City’s Hayley Raso and Aston Villa’s Emily Gielnik miss out through injury.

This month’s international action sees Australia play on home soil for the first time in almost 600 days.
