Watford defender Clifford confirms ACL blow

Watford defender Georgia Clifford has confirmed that she recently received the news that she has ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL).

The 23-year-old only joined The Golden Girls in the summer but she will now be required to undergo surgery before spending a lengthy period of rehabilitation on the sidelines.

Clifford took to her personal Twitter account earlier today to confirm the news in what was an emotional post from the player.

After joining Watford on a free transfer, Clifford was a substitute for her new club as they lost 2-1 at Durham on opening day. The player started the two games which followed against Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers but she has not been seen in a gold and black jersey since.

News of Clifford’s serious injury comes as a real blow to Watford with the club battling to get their first points of the season on the board in the FA Women’s Championship. Clinton Lancaster’s side are currently bottom of the table after losing all of their first six games since the club were awarded second tier status in the summer.

Watford return to action after the international break when they take on Clifford’s former club Crystal Palace at Vicarage Road.
