Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela collected her 100th senior international cap for Finland as they defeated Georgia 3-0 in Tbilisi this afternoon.
The 35-year-old stopper made her Finland debut in an Algarve Cup match against Sweden way back in March 2007 and she finally celebrated making her 100th appearance for her country in this afternoon’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier at the Mikheil Meskhi I Stadium.
Korpela captained her side against Georgia and was called into action on just three occasions on an afternoon which saw Finland put down another marker in their quest to feature at the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Linda Sällström’s 17th-minute goal gave Finland an early lead but to their credit, Georgia remained in the game until the final quarter of the match. Substitute Sanni Franssi’s 68th-minute effort finally put clear daylight between the two sides as the visitors established a two-goal lead before an Emmi Alanen penalty kick sealed a 3-0 win for Anna Signeul’s side.
Finland have now won their opening two matches of their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying campaign. The nation are in action again on Tuesday afternoon when they face the Republic of Ireland in Helsinki in their third match of qualifying.
