‘It wasn’t our best performance’ – Not pretty for Durham but Holmes delighted with three points

Abby Holmes was pleased to help Durham to defeat London City Lionesses 1-0 this afternoon despite it not being their best performance.

Dee Bradley’s early goal was the difference with Durham having to weather a lengthy spell of pressure from the London City Lionesses to claim the three points.

When speaking to the media after the match, Durham defender Holmes admitted that The Wildcats had not been at their best but nevertheless, they did enough to collect an important three points.

“We made it hard for ourselves, it wasn’t our best performance,” Holmes said. “We got the goal early on and defended fairly well but I would say that we weren’t the best going forward.

“We were solid at the back and we got the three points in the end.

Durham’s goal came after just four minutes with defensive midfielder Bradley popping up to head home from a corner kick. It was the player’s second goal in as many games.

Commenting on the goal, Holmes said “That one I said ‘Did you head it or me?’ because I was right behind her.

“She has been absolutely superb in these last few games in that holding midfield position, she must have headed the ball more than fifty times, that was what type of game it was.

“We need to get back playing our game with the ball on the floor and hopefully, we can get a few more goals.”

Durham are back in FA Women’s Championship action next Sunday when they travel to Hayes Lane to face Crystal Palace.
