Blackburn Rovers boss Donnelly ‘unbelievably pleased’ with late winner

Blackburn Rovers manager Gemma Donnelly was left ‘unbelievably pleased’ with her side’s late winner against Coventry United at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium on Sunday.

Goals from Saffron Jordan, Farah Crompton and Ellie Leek helped Donnelly’s side to a 3-2 victory despite the visitors pulling it back to 2-2 with goals from Katie Wilkinson and Rio Hardy.

Speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after the match, Rovers boss Donnelly was full of praise for her side’s performance and the attitude shown over the 90 minutes.

“I thought we started really well,” said Donnelly. “Obviously getting an early goal settles you a little bit. I thought we were really comfortable in the first half, we controlled the game well and had we been more clinical in front of goal, it would have afforded us to be three or four in front at half-time.

“Only being one-nil up invites the opposition to come out all guns firing which they did but I thought again, we managed the game well and we continued to create chances and nullified any threat that Coventry had up until the last 10 minutes. We stepped off which afforded them to get into our final third. I’m unbelievably pleased to get that winning goal.”

Striker Farah Crompton scored her first senior goal in the match. A deflected shot from Annabel Blanchard found it’s way to the youngster who tapped home for Rovers’ second of the afternoon. Donnelly said that she was delighted for Crompton to get her name on the scoresheet.

“I’m thrilled for Farah, she’s caused endless problems for a number of games,” said the Rovers boss. “She’s had penalty shouts and she’s been in positions where she’s had opportunities. It will do the world of good for her (the goal) and hopefully, it will give her momentum to start bagging more for us.”

Rovers return to action on Thursday evening when Sunderland are the visitors to The Sir Tom Finney Stadium in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup.
