Birmingham City head coach Scott Booth has tasked his side with becoming more clinical in front of the opposition goal.
The Blues go into tomorrow’s important Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Reading at St Andrew’s still searching for their first win of the season, although performances have been gradually improving with Birmingham City collecting their first point with a 1-1 draw at West Ham United last time out.
In their five games played, Birmingham City have registered 39 shots on goal but just two have found the back of the net. Ahead of this weekend’s fixture, head coach Booth said that his team are gelling nicely but they must begin to learn how to hurt the opposition.
“I think we have gelled well for a young, new group of players in the time that we have had,” Booth told FAWSL Full-Time in his pre-match press conference. “Are we there yet? No, we are definitely not there yet.
“I really feel that we still need to strengthen the squad but I think it is obvious for people watching to see that we are well-organised. We have done well in periods of the tough games against big clubs but we still need to get better at hurting the opposition and that’s the next step for us and the next stage in the building of the squad.”
Birmingham City avoided relegation on the final day of last season with a points tally of 14. Booth went on to say that there are no survival targets earmarked for this season, he simply wants to see his side grow and manage things game-by-game.
He said “I would like to say I am organised and thinking further ahead to that kind of plan but that’s not the case. I am really focused on making sure that the players are ready for each game that comes.
“There is a lot of work to be done so we are focusing on ourselves, making ourselves good enough to take points and then each game. It’s that old cliché but it really is taking it each game as it comes.
“I don’t think it is possible to put a target on things because you just never know how games are going to go at this level, each game is so tough and competitive. We go into them looking to take three points, especially when we face the teams around us or we will take any point that we can get in any game.”
Birmingham City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Reading kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon. Fans can buy tickets for the match right up until kick-off at St Andrew’s.
